Re: Urgent Petition to Free Jimmy Lai: Medical Parole for Treatment Abroad
Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigner and free speech activist, Jimmy Lai, is suffering from heart palpitations and diabetes. According to the September 4, 2025 Urgent Appeal filed by his son and his lawyers, at age 77, Jimmy Lai’s health is deteriorating rapidly. He has endured solitary confinement with limited access to natural light for almost five years. According to his son and his legal team, Mr. Lai has received inadequate treatment for his heart condition, high blood pressure and diabetes. They are concerned that he may die in prison.
We ask that you take swift, decisive action to secure the release of Jimmy Lai on medical parole, to join his son, Sebastian Lai, for treatment in the U.K. Immediate action is required to prevent this great hero from dying in prison.
Jimmy Lai has been charged with alleged “conspiracy to collude with foreign forces” under the controversial Hong Kong Security Law. Human rights groups, as well as 50 United States Senators, have rightly characterized these charges as politically motivated. These charges are designed to punish Jimmy Lai for his passionate, effective and self-sacrificial advocacy for free speech and democracy, and to intimidate others from taking a similar stand.
By shining a light on the human rights atrocities of the Chinese Communist Party, Jimmy Lai has become a beacon of hope for the people of Hong Kong and the world. He has sacrificed his own personal freedom for that of his beloved Hong Kong. He is a man of heroic virtue and towering moral excellence. The CCP is doing everything it can to extinguish the man and snuff out the hope. We must not allow this to happen.
We are grateful to all who have stood for Jimmy Lai. We are especially heartened by President Trump’s statement, “I am going to do everything I can to save him.”
President Trump, Prime Minister Starmer and other World Leaders – including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Members of the United States Congress, Members of the European Parliament, United Nations Human Rights Council, United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, and the Secretariat of State of the Holy See — we appeal to you to take urgent action to free Jimmy Lai. If he is not freed soon, we are concerned that he will die in jail.
